Inter-Faith Food Shuttle
Direct Mail Campaigns
The Challenge
Inter-Faith Food Shuttle (IFFS) serves seven counties across North Carolina by recovering and distributing nutritious food while addressing the root causes of hunger through education, workforce development, and community agriculture. As the organization grew, its annual fundraising program needed to evolve to meet increasing community needs.
While the Food Shuttle’s direct mail program generated a positive return, leadership believed it could deliver stronger results. Their existing approach relied on a national mail vendor that focused primarily on producing mail pieces rather than developing an integrated fundraising strategy. Campaigns lacked cohesive messaging and creative differentiation, required significant staff oversight, and consisted of numerous fundraising appeals that competed with one another throughout the year.
The Food Shuttle wanted more than a vendor, they wanted a strategic partner who understood nonprofit fundraising and could help build a stronger, more sustainable direct mail fundraising strategy.
The Solution
We began by listening. We met with the Food Shuttle’s leadership and development team to understand their goals, review previous campaign performance, evaluate donor data, and identify opportunities to strengthen the overall fundraising experience.
Our assessment revealed that the challenge wasn’t simply the direct mail itself, it was the broader strategy. The organization was running too many campaigns, creating donor fatigue while stretching staff capacity. Messaging varied drastically from campaign to campaign, creative assets lacked consistency, and direct mail operated largely in isolation from digital communications. Rather than recommending more mailings, we recommended fewer, more intentional campaigns supported by an integrated communications strategy.
Together, we transformed the annual fundraising strategy into three comprehensive, multi-channel campaigns that combined direct mail with coordinated email, social media, digital advertising, branded graphics, and targeted donor outreach. Each campaign was built around a clear theme, compelling messaging, and a consistent visual identity that carried across every touchpoint.
We provided campaign strategy, messaging, campaign branding, direct mail and graphic design, digital campaign assets, project management, and ongoing strategic counsel throughout the year. We also introduced audience segmentation and real-time performance monitoring, allowing the Food Shuttle to adapt messaging and tactics based on campaign results instead of waiting until the following year. The result was a more cohesive donor experience that focused on building relationships, not simply sending more appeals.
The Results
32%
increase in annual campaign giving
31%
beyond first-year EOY fundraising goals
37%
beyond second-year EOY fundraising goals
The transformation of the Food Shuttle’s direct mail strategy delivered measurable results while simplifying the fundraising process. Over two years, annual campaign giving increased by 32%. End-of-year fundraising exceeded organizational goals by 31% in the first year and 37% in the second year. The Food Shuttle also experienced growth in new donors, reactivated lapsed supporters, average gift size, and donor retention.
Perhaps most importantly, these results were achieved while reducing the number of fundraising campaigns and maintaining the same investment the organization had previously made with its national direct mail vendor. By replacing a high-volume approach with a more strategic, integrated campaign model, the Food Shuttle generated stronger results while reducing donor fatigue and creating a more manageable workload for staff.
The strengthened annual giving program also positioned the organization to respond more effectively to unexpected funding challenges, providing a more resilient and dependable base of philanthropic support.
“Working with Angel Oak Creative transformed how we approach our direct mail and annual fundraising efforts. Their strategic recommendations, creative campaigns, and ongoing partnership have helped us exceed our fundraising goals and grow donor engagement.
Together, we’ve truly built a stronger annual giving program while actually simplifying our campaign calendar. Their expertise has allowed us to achieve more with the same level of investment.”

The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle partnership demonstrates an important truth about nonprofit fundraising: better results don’t necessarily come from asking more often, they come from asking more strategically.
By taking a holistic view of the annual donor journey, simplifying campaign cadence, strengthening messaging, and integrating every communication channel around a unified strategy, we helped Inter-Faith Food Shuttle build a stronger annual giving program that continues to produce lasting results.
For nonprofits looking to improve annual fundraising, the lesson is clear: direct mail remains a powerful fundraising tool, but it delivers its greatest impact when it’s part of a strategic, integrated campaign designed around the donor experience rather than high-volume mailings.
